Back in 1982, Nancy Sommers, in the field of composition studies, wrote a seminal journal article titled “Responding to Student Writing.” In it, Sommers discusses how teachers appropriate student papers and also provides a pathway for instructors to think about how they respond to writing communicates to students a specific way they think writing should happen and what “good writing” is. The article, as a PDF, can be accessed here: Sommers, Responding to Student Writing. A full annotation of the piece will also be available under Bibliography in the Resource section of this site.
